Cubs Sign Veteran Infielder Justin Turner to One-Year Deal
Agreement Details
MESA, Ariz. — The Chicago Cubs have reached an agreement with veteran infielder Justin Turner on a one-year contract worth $6 million, pending a physical, according to sources.
Turner’s Performance and Experience
Turner, 40, split time between the Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners last season, posting a .354 on-base percentage over 139 games. He recorded 11 home runs while hitting .259. Across 16 major league seasons, he has maintained an .821 OPS.
Role with the Cubs
The Cubs had been searching for a backup first baseman to support Michael Busch, as well as a versatile option for third base. While Turner fits both roles, he is not expected to play third regularly, having made only six appearances there last season.
Depth and Postseason Experience
His presence provides additional depth at third base, particularly as rookie Matt Shaw is dealing with an oblique injury early in spring training. Turner brings significant postseason experience, having played in 86 playoff games—a valuable asset for a Cubs team aiming to reach the postseason for the first time since 2020.
Career Journey
This move marks Turner’s seventh MLB organization. He previously enjoyed a successful tenure with the Los Angeles Dodgers, earning two All-Star selections and finishing in the top 15 of MVP voting three times.
